Samurai Town

Yonezawa, located in Yamagata Prefecture, is a city steeped in samurai heritage and architectural elegance. The Uesugi Clan Mausoleum, a nationally designated historic site, houses the graves of eleven daimyō, including Uesugi Kenshin, whose remains were relocated here in 1876. Set amidst centuries-old cedar trees, the site exudes a solemn atmosphere. Nearby, the Uesugi Shrine, established in 1876 on the former grounds of Yonezawa Castle, honors the legacy of the Uesugi clan. The shrine's architecture, designed by renowned architect Chūta Itō in 1913, showcases a blend of traditional and Meiji-era styles.
