Divine Origins

Taga Taisha, affectionately known as “Otaga-san,” is one of Shiga’s most revered Shinto shrines, dedicated to the primordial deities Izanagi and Izanami, who are said to have created Japan and its gods. The shrine has been a center of worship since ancient times, attracting pilgrims seeking blessings for longevity, marriage, and protection from misfortune. Its serene grounds feature the Oku-shoin Garden, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, and the iconic Taikobashi Bridge, both donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in gratitude for his mother's recovery. Visitors can also explore the charming “Ema Street,” lined with traditional shops and eateries leading up to the shrine.
