Hokū Hongū (Hokū Shrine)

Overview

Hokū Hongū, also known as Hokū Shrine, is located in Taga, Shiga Prefecture, not far from Taga Taisha Shrine. This smaller, atmospheric shrine offers a peaceful escape and a glimpse into local history. Originally established as the guardian shrine of Minman-ji Temple during the Asuka period, Hokū Hongū features scenic views of Taga from its elevated grounds. Visitors can also explore remnants of Minman-ji Temple within the shrine grounds. A notable highlight is the vermilion torii gate near the Taga Service Area, especially beautiful during the autumn foliage season. The shrine is easily accessible from the Taga Service Area via a pedestrian path.
