Fiery Leaves

Founded in 606 by Prince Shōtoku, Hyakusaiji is one of Japan’s oldest temples and a cornerstone of the Koto Sanzan trio in eastern Shiga. Its hillside grounds feature the striking Niōmon Gate adorned with giant straw sandals, a serene pond garden, and a Hondō (main hall) designated as an Important Cultural Property. The temple is especially renowned for its vivid autumn foliage, earning it a spot among Japan’s top 100 fall color destinations. Originally inspired by a Korean temple, Hyakusaiji reflects early cultural ties between Japan and the Korean kingdom of Baekje.
