Merchant Architecture

Higashiomi preserves the legacy of the Ōmi merchants through elegant Edo-period residences in the Gokashō district, including the Tonomura Shigeru House, Fujii Hikoshiro House & Garden, and Nakae Jungorō House. These homes showcase refined architecture and the cultural lifestyle of a once-thriving merchant class. The Kyorinbobetsuin Merchant Museum offers deeper insights into this history. Overlooking the region, Kannonshōji Temple crowns Mt. Kinugasa with sweeping views and spiritual significance as part of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
