Sacred Mountain Craftsmanship
Perched on the slopes of Mount Hakuun in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture, Myogi Shrine is a historic Shinto sanctuary established in 537 AD. The shrine is renowned for its black-lacquered Gongen-zukuri architecture, adorned with intricate carvings by artisans who also worked on Nikko's Toshogu Shrine. Significant structures like the Karamon and Somon gates are designated Important Cultural Properties. Visitors ascend 165 stone steps, flanked by ancient cedar trees, to reach the main hall, which enshrines deities such as Yamatotakeru no Mikoto and Toyoke no Okami. The shrine's location offers panoramic views of the Kanto region, making it a serene destination for both spiritual reflection and appreciation of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
