Zen Architecture

Ashikaga, situated in Tochigi Prefecture, is a city rich in history and cultural heritage. A notable landmark is Banna-ji Temple, a Shingon Buddhist temple established in 1196 by Ashikaga Yoshikane on the site of his family's fortified residence. The temple's main hall, reconstructed in 1299, exemplifies early Zen-influenced architecture and was designated a National Treasure in 2013. Surrounded by moats, earthen walls, and four gates, the temple retains features of its samurai origins and is recognized among Japan's Top 100 Castles. Visitors can also admire the Tahōtō Pagoda and a 600-year-old ginkgo tree within the temple grounds.
