Stone Walls & Sakura

Yamato Koriyama is home to the historic Koriyama Castle, originally built in 1580 by Tsutsui Junkei and later expanded by Toyotomi Hidenaga. Although much of the original structure was dismantled during the Meiji era, the castle's stone walls and moats remain, featuring unique construction that incorporated gravestones and Buddhist statues due to material shortages. Restoration efforts have rebuilt key structures like the Otemon Gate and turrets, and the castle grounds are now a public park renowned for its 800 cherry trees, making it a prime spot for hanami during the annual Yamato Koriyama Castle Festival. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the observation deck atop the tenshu base and explore the tranquil surroundings that blend history with natural beauty.
