Reslience & Remembrence

Rikuzentakata, located on Iwate Prefecture’s Sanriku Coast, is a city shaped by resilience and remembrance. Once home to the scenic Takata Matsubara pine forest, the area was devastated by the 2011 tsunami, leaving only the “Miracle Pine”—a single tree that became a national symbol of hope. Today, the Takatamatsubara Memorial Park honors this legacy, featuring the preserved tree and the Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum, which documents the disaster and recovery efforts. Visitors can also explore the Rikuzentakata City Museum, showcasing the region’s natural and cultural history.
