The Earthquake Remains: Former Rikuzentakata Municipal Kesen Junior High School stands as a stark reminder of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Located in the Imaizumi area of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, this preserved school building serves as a memorial and a place for learning about disaster prevention. The school, situated near the mouth of the Kesengawa River, was struck by a massive tsunami that reached near the rooftop, but all students and staff had evacuated to higher ground beforehand. Visitors can freely view the exterior of the earthquake remains, witnessing the power of the tsunami. The site includes a parking area, public restrooms, and informational panels. Guided tours of the interior are available by reservation.
