Historic Pilgrimage Route

Nestled in the mountains of Ibigawa, Tanigumisan Kegon-ji is the 33rd and final temple of the historic Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, founded in 798 and designated a Japanese Heritage site in 2019. Its 800-meter approach is lined with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant maple foliage in autumn, making it one of Hida and Mino’s top seasonal viewing spots. Pilgrims and visitors alike can explore the temple’s serene grounds, participate in rituals such as the Kaidan-meguri (a symbolic journey through darkness), and enjoy local specialties from shops along the path. The temple’s tranquil setting and rich spiritual legacy offer a peaceful retreat into Japan’s sacred traditions. Short bus ride from Tanigumiguchi station.
