Mummified Monk

Nestled in the mountains of Ibigawa, Ryōkaizan Yokokura-ji is a serene Tendai Buddhist temple founded in 803. It houses 22 National Important Cultural Properties, including Heian- and Kamakura-era statues and mandalas. The temple is renowned for enshrining the self-mummified monk Myoshin. Visitors can explore the three-story pagoda, main hall, and the vermilion bridge, especially picturesque during the vibrant autumn foliage season from early to late November. Yokokura-ji offers a tranquil retreat into Japan’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Roughly 1 bour from Tanigumiguchi station. Best combined with Tanigumisan.
