Basalt Columns

The Tojinbo Cliffs in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, are a dramatic 1-kilometer stretch of rugged basalt columns formed by volcanic activity over 12 million years ago. Towering up to 25 meters above the Sea of Japan, these rare geological formations are found in only a few places worldwide. Visitors can explore the cliffs via walking trails or take sightseeing boat tours for a unique perspective. Nearby Oshima Island, accessible by a red bridge, offers a tranquil escape with its lush forests and the revered Ominato Shrine. The area is part of the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park and is known for its stunning sunsets and natural beauty.
