Christian Island

Amakusa, a remote island group southwest of Kumamoto, is known for its scenic landscapes, Christian heritage, and historical significance. The islands played a central role in the Shimabara Rebellion (1637–1638) and became a refuge for "Hidden Christians" who practiced their faith in secret during the Edo Period's religious persecution. Visitors can explore museums, historic churches, lush landscapes, and enjoy dolphin-watching tours in the surrounding waters.
