Zen in Stillness

Founded in 1244 by Zen master Dōgen, Eiheiji is one of the two head temples of the Sōtō Zen school, nestled in the cedar forests of Fukui. The sprawling temple complex features over 70 interconnected halls where more than 100 monks continue centuries-old meditation and ascetic practices. Visitors can explore quiet corridors, observe zazen (seated meditation), or join overnight temple stays. Surrounded by towering trees and soft light, Eiheiji offers a deep sense of calm and timeless discipline.
