Eiheiji Temple, the head temple of Soto Zen Buddhism, was founded in 1244 by Zen Master Dogen as a place for ascetic practice. Nestled among ancient cedar trees, some as old as 680 years, the temple complex features over 70 halls and pavilions, including the essential "Seven Main Halls." Visitors can experience Zazen meditation and sutra transcription. For a more immersive experience, you can participate in a stay-in program that mirrors the daily life of monks, though advance booking (two weeks prior) is required. Located in Eiheiji, Fukui, it's accessible by bus or train from Fukui Station. Admission is ¥500 for adults and high school students, and ¥200 for junior high and elementary school students.
