Tohoku's Terraced Jewel

Located in Okura Village, Yamagata Prefecture, the Shikamura Rice Terraces span approximately 120 hectares, making them the largest in the Tohoku region. Comprising around 1,900 paddies, these terraces are recognized among Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces. The area's heavy snowfall, sometimes exceeding two meters, and underground water from Mt. Gassan and Mt. Hayama contribute to the quality of the rice cultivated here. Visitors can enjoy seasonal landscapes: reflective waters in spring, lush greenery in summer, golden fields in autumn, and snow-covered vistas in winter. A highlight is the annual "Hotaru-bi" (Firefly Light) concert in August, where approximately 1,200 candles illuminate the terraces. The site is accessible by car, approximately 35–40 minutes from JR Shinjo Station.
