Industrial Revolution

Omuta, located in Fukuoka Prefecture, is a city deeply rooted in Japan's industrial history. The Miike Coal Mine, once the largest in Japan, played a pivotal role in the nation's modernization during the Meiji era. Today, visitors can explore the Miike Colliery pit sites, including the Miyanohara Pit, which showcases preserved mining structures from the early 20th century. The Omuta Coal Industry and Science Museum offers interactive exhibits detailing the evolution of coal mining and its impact on the region's development. Adjacent to the mine, the Port of Miike served as a crucial export hub for coal, contributing to Japan's industrial growth. Just across the Ariake Sea in Arao, Kumamoto Prefecture, the Manda Pit stands as a testament to the area's coal mining heritage and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town also has a zoo, great for kids.
