Zen in Cedar

Untoan Temple in Minamiuonuma is a tranquil Soto Zen site with over 1,200 years of history, founded in the Nara period and revived by Uesugi Norizane in the 15th century. Surrounded by mossy grounds and ancient cedars, it features a stone path inscribed with the Lotus Sutra, said to bring blessings. Once a training site for Uesugi Kagekatsu and Naoe Kanetsugu, the temple offers Zen meditation by reservation. Located 4.7 km from Shiozawa Station, it’s easily reached by bus.
