Unto-an Temple, a Soto Zen Buddhist temple with over 1,200 years of history, is located in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. Known as one of Echigo's most important temples, it's accessible by a 10-minute drive from JR Shiozawa Station or 15 minutes from the Shiozawa Ishiuchi IC on the Kanetsu Expressway. The temple is famous for its association with warlords Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen, whose letters are displayed in the treasure hall. Visitors can explore the main hall, a designated cultural property of Niigata Prefecture, and experience the unique stone-paved path where each stone is inscribed with a character from the Lotus Sutra. Open from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM (last entry 30 minutes before closing), except Wednesdays (excluding holidays and New Year period). Admission is ¥300 per person, with discounts for groups of 20 or more. The best time to visit is during the autumn foliage season.
