Chōon-ji Temple, located near the historic Shiozawa-juku post town in Minamiuonuma, Niigata, is a venerable Jodo sect temple easily accessible from Shiozawa Station. While the temple interiors are not generally open to the public, the striking vermilion two-story bell tower gate is a highlight. The temple grounds also feature a ginkgo tree, offering beautiful autumn foliage. Notably, Chōon-ji is the final resting place of Suzuki Bokushi, a writer known for his tales of Echigo. The vibrant Nio statues at the gate and the dragon painting on the ceiling are particularly noteworthy, reminiscent of the Daiyuin Mausoleum at Nikko. Visitors can appreciate the temple's architecture and serene atmosphere.
