Living Volcano Zone

Part of the UNESCO-designated Toya-Usu Global Geopark, Mount Usu and the neighboring Showa Shinzan offer a rare chance to witness an evolving volcanic landscape up close. Mount Usu is an active volcano with accessible craters and panoramic trails, while Showa Shinzan dramatically rose from farmland during eruptions in the 1940s and still steams today. A ropeway ride provides sweeping views of Lake Tōya and surrounding peaks, making the area a fascinating blend of natural power and scenic beauty.
