Ancient Serenity

Founded in 736 by imperial decree of Emperor Shōmu, Oppouji Temple (also known as Otohō-ji) is one of Niigata’s oldest Buddhist temples. Located in Tainai, it belongs to the Chizan sect of Shingon Buddhism and enshrines Dainichi Nyorai, the cosmic Buddha. The temple grounds feature a serene garden, a pond, and a notable three-storied pagoda built in 1620, designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Visitors can also experience the temple's unique "truth-predicting oracle," which has garnered attention for its perceived accuracy. 5.2 km from Sakamachi station. There is no bus route.
