Ancient Roots

Sakurai is a cradle of early Japanese spirituality and culture, home to Ōmiwa Shrine, considered the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan, where Mount Miwa itself is worshipped as the deity. Just north lies Hibara Shrine, known for its rare triple torii gate and peaceful forest setting. The city is close to the Asuka Historical Museum, which preserves key artifacts from Japan’s formative Asuka period, and the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, a hub for heritage conservation. Families can also enjoy the Kashihara Insectarium, featuring butterfly houses and educational exhibits.
