Serene Mountaintop

Okuboji Temple, the 88th and final stop on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, is a serene mountaintop sanctuary nestled in Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture. Founded in the early 8th century and associated with Kūkai, the temple is revered for its principal image of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing. Pilgrims often leave their walking staffs here upon completing the 1,200-kilometer journey, symbolizing the fulfillment of their spiritual quest. The temple also features a unique underground passage beneath the Daishi Hall, where visitors can step on sand from each of the 88 pilgrimage temples, receiving blessings as if they had visited each one. Surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage, Okuboji offers a tranquil and reflective atmosphere for all who visit.
