Timeless Terraced Landscape

The Obasute Rice Terraces, located on the slopes of Mount Kamuriki in Chikuma, Nagano Prefecture, comprise approximately 1,500 terraced paddies dating back to the Sengoku and Edo periods. Recognized among Japan's 100 most beautiful rice terraces, they offer panoramic views of the Chikuma River and Zenkoji Plain, especially captivating during the "Tagoto-no-tsuki" phenomenon in late May to June, when moonlight reflects in the water-filled paddies. Adjacent Obasute Station, known for its unique switchback railway, provides one of Japan's top three train window views. The area is also steeped in folklore, with the name "Obasute" linked to ancient legends of filial piety
