Pure Land Birthplace

Tanjoji Temple in Kumenan, Okayama, marks the birthplace of Hōnen (1133–1212), founder of Japan’s Jōdo (Pure Land) Buddhist sect. Established in 1193, the temple complex features significant structures like the Sanmon gate, Mieidō, Amidado, and a Treasure Hall, showcasing Edo-period architecture. A notable feature is the massive ginkgo tree, a symbol of the temple. Tanjoji is also part of the Hōnen Shōnin 25 Sacred Sites Pilgrimage, attracting devotees and visitors interested in Buddhist history.
