Myojo-ji Temple

Overview

Myojo-ji Temple, affectionately known as "Kokuzo-san," is located atop a mountain offering stunning panoramic views. The temple is accessible by car, though the final ascent is quite steep. The temple's grounds feature unique limestone formations sculpted by erosion. According to temple legend, Myojo-ji was founded in 686 by En no Ozunu under the order of Emperor Jito, with Kukai later restoring it in 801 and converting it to Shingon Buddhism. The main hall was rebuilt in 1863 with the support of the Toda clan. The poet Basho visited in 1689 after completing his journey along the narrow road to the deep north and composed a haiku here. A visit to Myojo-ji offers both scenic beauty and a glimpse into Japanese history and spirituality.
