Located near Yahiko Shrine, the Octopus Zelkova Tree (Tako-Keyaki) is an impressive natural monument in Niigata Prefecture. This ancient zelkova tree, estimated to be over 800 years old, is named for its root system that resembles an octopus. Situated at Sumiyoshi Shrine, a branch shrine of Yahiko Shrine, the tree stands at 30 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 8 meters. Visitors can easily access the site with a 10-minute walk from Yahiko Station or a 25-minute drive from Sanjo Tsubame IC. While the tree's unique branching may be obscured by foliage, its sheer size and historical significance make it a worthwhile visit any time of year. Parking is available for 200 cars.
