Overview

Karouto in Kurahashi, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a historic port town that once served as a vital waiting harbor for favorable winds and tides. Similar to the more famous Tomonoura, Karouto features a small, well-preserved village at the southernmost tip of Kurahashi Island. Easily accessible by a 20-minute community bus ride from Katsurahama Onsenkan to Kashima, Karouto boasts a unique grid-like street layout, rare for port towns, and two harbors (Ura Port and Shimoura Port) that allowed ships to adapt to changing wind directions. The former Miyabayashi residence, once a lumber merchant house from the Hyuga region, offers a glimpse into the town's prosperous past.
