The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto, established in 1982, houses the Sakai Collection, amassed over 200 years by five generations of the Sakai family, paper wholesalers originally from Matsumoto. The collection includes approximately 100,000 ukiyo-e prints, featuring works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Ando Hiroshige. Visitors can explore depictions of kabuki, the Yoshiwara district, and the lives of ordinary Edo citizens. Located a short taxi ride from Matsumoto Station or a quick drive from the Matsumoto IC, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the world of ukiyo-e. Note that the exhibits change periodically, so repeat visits may offer new discoveries.
