Lake Katanuma

Overview

Lake Katanuma is a highly acidic caldera lake formed by volcanic activity, known for its distinctive sulfurous aroma and emerald-green waters that change color with the weather. Visitors can enjoy scenic walking trails and boat rentals (seasonal). Note that the area is closed during winter (late November to late April) due to freezing conditions and snow. Located a 10-minute drive from Naruko-Onsen Station, it's an accessible natural attraction in Miyagi Prefecture. The lake's unique ecosystem, devoid of fish but home to numerous non-biting midges, offers a fascinating glimpse into volcanic landscapes. A restaurant near the lake provides meals with a view.
