The Kitakami Tenshochi Cherry Blossom Festival, recognized as one of Tohoku's premier cherry blossom viewing spots and one of the 'Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan,' celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021. The expansive grounds feature approximately 10,000 cherry trees of about 150 different varieties. The 2km-long row of cherry trees along the Kitakami River is particularly spectacular. During the festival, enjoy folk performances like the Onikenbai (demon sword dance) on weekends. Admission is free, making it a perfect destination for a spring outing. Easily accessible by car or train, the festival offers boat rides and horse-drawn carriages for a memorable experience. Visit during late April for the best chance to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom.
