The Dewa Sanzan Shrine, also known as the Sankosaisai-den, is a unique and historically significant site where the deities of Mount Gassan, Mount Haguro, and Mount Yudono are enshrined together. This grand shrine features a striking 2.1-meter thick thatched roof and a fully lacquered interior. Rebuilt in 1818 after repeated fires, the current structure stands as a testament to traditional craftsmanship. The shrine is located at the summit of Mount Haguro, accessible by bus from Tsuruoka Station followed by a short walk, or via a toll road. Don't miss the sacred Mirror Pond in front of the shrine, a focal point of Haguro worship for centuries. Visiting during the daytime allows ample time to explore the shrine and its surroundings.
