The Former Katayama Residence in Takahashi, Okayama, offers a glimpse into the life of a successful bengara (red pigment) merchant family. Established in 1759, the Katayama family produced and sold bengara for over 200 years. The preserved Edo to Meiji era residence showcases the architecture of the time and is an integral part of the historic Fukiyacho streetscape. Visitors can explore the main house, storehouse, and workshop to learn about the bengara production process. Located near the Fukiyacho bus stop, it's accessible from Okayama Expressway Kayo IC or Chugoku Expressway Niimi IC, and a taxi ride from JR Bitchu-Takahashi Station. A joint ticket with the adjacent local museum is available.
