Hiji, also known as Sunrise Town, is located between Beppu and Kitsuki on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. Historically, it was the castle town of the Hiji clan, with remnants of Hiji Castle and the former domain school, Chidokan. Today, Hiji is famous for Shiroshita Karei (stone flounder) caught in the sea below the castle ruins. Visitors can explore the castle ruins, enjoy views of Beppu Bay, and sample local cuisine. The Hiji Town Tourist Information Center is conveniently located in the castle town. It's a quiet town ideal for leisurely strolls and enjoying local delicacies.
