The Kikuya Residence was the home of the Kikuya family, purveyors to the Hagi clan. This wealthy merchant family's residence frequently served as an official lodging for shogunate inspectors. Built in the early Edo period, it is one of Japan's oldest townhouses. The main house and five other buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and approximately one-third of the 2000-tsubo (approx. 1.65 acre) site is currently open to the public. It is located in the Hagi castle town, which was registered as a World Heritage Site in July 2015 as part of the "Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution". 《Special Opening of the New Garden in Spring and Autumn (Limited Time Only)》 The beautiful New Garden, normally closed to the public, is specially opened each year during the season of beautiful fresh greenery and the season of autumn leaves. This New Garden underwent large-scale landscaping from the Meiji to Showa periods.
