The Fudai Water Gate, known as the "Miracle Gate," stands as a testament to disaster preparedness, having protected Fudai Village from the devastating 2011 tsunami. This impressive 15.5-meter-high structure at the mouth of the Fudai River is one of the largest of its kind in the Tohoku region, built to withstand a potential 15-meter tsunami. Former village mayor Kotoku Kazumura championed its construction despite opposition, driven by the motto, "What has happened twice must not happen a third time." Completed in 1984 at a cost of ¥3.56 billion, the gate is located along the Michinoku Coastal Trail and is a designated Geosite of the Sanriku Geopark. Visitors can access it via a 15-minute walk from Fudai Station on the Sanriku Railway or a short drive from the Fudai Interchange on the Sanriku Coastal Road.
