Explore the historic Matsuoka Castle Ruins in Takahagi, Ibaraki, the former residence of the Mito Domain's retainer, the Nakayama clan. While only the dry moat remains, the surrounding townscape retains the atmosphere of a castle town. The castle ruins, once known as Tatsugoyama Castle, are now the site of Matsuoka Elementary School. The approach to the main gate, known as Oyashiki Street, preserves the ambiance of a samurai residence. A visit in late November allows you to combine your trip with the autumn foliage at Hananuki Gorge. Access is a 20-minute bus ride from Takahagi Station.
