Overview

The Kujira (Whale) Museum in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, preserves and exhibits materials related to traditional whaling. Located near the Tsū fishing port, a 23-minute bus ride from Nagato-shi or Senzaki Stations, this small museum showcases the deep connection between fishermen and whales. Visitors can view photographs of fishermen who lived alongside whales, traditional whaling tools, and drums used in whale songs. The museum is known for its collection of 140 pieces of whaling equipment, designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties. A nearby whale cemetery, containing the remains of over 70 whale fetuses, adds to the historical significance of the area. Admission is ¥200, making it an affordable and educational stop.
