Cape Shio Lighthouse, a symbol of mainland Japan's southernmost point, has guided ships for over a century since 1873. Designed by British engineer Richard Henry Brunton, this white lighthouse stands on a 30-meter cliff. Visitors can climb the 68-step spiral staircase for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. An adjacent museum displays historical materials. Located in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, it's accessible by a 20-minute bus ride from Kushimoto Station. There is paid parking nearby and the entrance fee is ¥300 for adults; free for elementary school children and younger.
