The Sankyo Warehouses in Sakata, Yamagata, offer a glimpse into the region's rice storage history, dating back to the feudal era. Built in 1893, the twelve earthen warehouses feature a row of Zelkova trees that provide natural shade and ventilation. Visitors can explore one of the warehouses, which has been converted into the Shonai Rice History Museum and Sakata City Tourist Information Center, showcasing rice vouchers and farming tools. The warehouses are conveniently located near the Araidagawa River, a 10-minute bus ride from Sakata Station. The best time to visit is during the fall foliage season to witness the Zelkova trees' vibrant colors. Admission is free.
