Honjoji Temple

Overview

Honjoji Temple, located in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, is the head temple of the Hokke Sect Jinmon School. This impressive temple complex features ten sub-temples and a surrounding temple town atmosphere, complete with moat-like structures. Visitors can admire the works of Ishikawa Uncho, including the famous "Red Bull" sculpture (viewable for a fee at the temple office). Other Uncho works can be found on the gates of the sub-temples. The temple grounds are extensive, requiring ample time to explore fully, especially to appreciate the intricate carvings. Note that outdoor carvings may be obscured by snow covers during winter.
