Hofuku-ji Temple, located a 5-minute walk from Shimoda Station, is a historic site with connections to both Sakamoto Ryoma and Tangin Okichi. In 1854, it served as the headquarters for the Japanese plenipotentiaries during negotiations for the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the U.S. and Japan. The temple is also known as the place where Katsu Kaishu sought and received permission from Yamanouchi Yodo to pardon Sakamoto Ryoma's crime of desertion. Adjacent to the temple is the Okichi Memorial Museum, and the Okichi Festival and memorial service are held annually on March 27th. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and learn about its significant role in Japanese history.
