Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, the head shrine of all Kumano shrines, exudes a venerable atmosphere as a sacred site. Many pilgrims on the Nakaheji route of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails arrive here first after their arduous journey. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1995, the shrine features 158 stone steps flanked by banners and towering cedar trees, evoking a sense of timeless history. The shrine is also known for its Yatagarasu (three-legged crow), a symbol of Kumano and the Japan national football team. Located in Wakayama Prefecture, it's accessible by bus from Shingu or Kii-Tanabe Stations. Visit to experience the spiritual heart of Kumano.
