Shintokukan is a historical academy founded in 1860 by Lord Naito Yorinao to educate samurai. Located in Takato-machi, Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, it's a 30-minute drive (15 km) from Ina IC or a 50-minute drive (31 km) from Suwa IC. Alternatively, take a 25-minute bus ride from JR Iida Line's Ina-shi Station. While you can't enter the buildings, you can explore the grounds and admire the well-preserved architecture, including the traditional thatched roof. The site offers a glimpse into the past and is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season. It's a free and unmanned facility, with audio guides available to learn about its history. Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Takato Castle Ruins Park.
