The Haisei-den Hall, located in Ueno Park in Iga, Mie Prefecture, was built in 1942 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the renowned haiku poet Matsuo Basho. Designed to represent Basho's travel attire, the hall features a round, cypress-bark roof symbolizing a travel hat, an octagonal base representing a robe, and a wooden plaque representing his face. Inside, an Iga-ware seated statue of Basho is housed and is only viewable during the Basho Festival on October 12th. Visitors can appreciate the unique architecture and serene atmosphere of this culturally significant landmark while exploring Ueno Park, easily accessible a 5-minute walk from Uenoshi Station. Admission is free, making it an ideal stop for those interested in Japanese literature and history.
