The Maiko Teahouse Somaro is a beautifully restored traditional restaurant in Sakata, Yamagata, offering a glimpse into the opulent teahouse culture of the Edo period. Originally established as the Somaya restaurant, the current wooden structure was rebuilt after a fire in 1894 and is now a registered National Cultural Asset. Visitors can enjoy a maiko (apprentice geisha) dance performance in the grand hall, explore exhibits of Hina dolls and artwork, and relax in the tea room. Located a short bus ride from Sakata Station, Somaro provides a unique cultural experience, especially during the afternoon maiko performances.
