Taimatsu Akashi is one of Japan's three major fire festivals, boasting over 420 years of tradition. Held annually on the second Saturday of November in Gorozan, Sukagawa, Fukushima, the festival features young men carrying massive 10-meter-long, 3-ton torches through the town. These torches, along with about 30 others and a special torch resembling Sukagawa Castle, are set ablaze, creating a spectacular display of flames against the night sky. The event commemorates the battles of Sukagawa Castle and offers a unique cultural experience. Access is a 15-minute walk from JR Sukagawa Station or a 5-minute drive from the Tohoku Expressway Sukagawa Interchange. Be sure to dress warmly, as November in Tohoku can be quite cold.
