The Sixteen Arhat Rocks in Yuza, Yamagata, feature 22 stone carvings of Buddhist figures etched into natural coastal rocks. Commissioned by Kaizenji Temple's Kankai priest and completed around 140 years ago, these carvings honor fishermen lost at sea and ensure maritime safety. Located a 15-minute walk from Fukiura Station, the site offers a unique blend of art and nature. Visitors can explore the carvings up close, though the terrain can be uneven. The site is particularly beautiful during sunset. Note that there are limited facilities nearby, so plan accordingly.
Completed approximately 140 years ago, in the first year of the Meiji era.
